Cape Town – University of Cape Town students live in fear after two incidents of robbery and attempted abduction occurred on campus this week.
Social media was abuzz after screenshots of a whatsapp conversation revealed that a female student was almost abducted on Tuesday evening near Baxter Computer Labs, on the university’s Lower Campus.
According to the screenshot, the student was attacked and dragged into a white vehicle as she was leaving Baxter Computer Labs. The screenshot further reveals that the vehicle was occupied by three men, two were seated at the front, while one was seated at the back. The student managed to escape after she fought them off and she also got help from a passerby.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Molohola confirmed that, “a case of an alleged attacked on a student was reported to Campus Protection Services (CPS) on Tuesday morning. It has also been reported to the SAPS”.
In another incident just a few hours apart, at 3am, Wednesday morning a male student was attacked on Grotto Road close to the Middle Campus.
Commenting on this incident, Molohola said, “The student was walking off-campus near Grotto Road around 3am when he was attacked by two unknown men who robbed him off his wallet. He sustained injuries to his face and was taken to hospital. He is expected to be released from hospital on Thursday evening”. The incident was reported to CPS and a case was yet to be filed, said Molohola.
UCT has urged its students to report any crime incidents to the CPS on 021 650 2222/3.
