Yet another activist has been killed in Khayelitsha’s Town 2 over the weekend.
Barely two months after the death of Mthunzi ‘Ras Moziah’ Zuma, another leader in the land occupation, Philela Gilwa was stabbed in Town 2 on Saturday evening.
Commenting on his death, Fees Must Fall Western Cape, described Philela’s death as a ‘rude awakening and a cold reminder that life in the township is a borrowed existence’.
Philela hails from Queenstown and according to FMFWC he had been suspended at the University of Free State (UFS) after being involved in Fees Must Fall activities. His suspension was due to expire in 3 months time. He had been staying in Kilombo Village described as a home for ‘run-away slaves’.
“Soon after his arrival, he immersed himself in the struggle for land occupation currently underway at Zwe Lethu people’s movement. Marshaling all that he learnt as the chairperson of PASMA at the University of Free State, he sterlingly and honorably served the Black cause”, said FMFWC.
Police say the investigation continues but no suspects have been arrested yet. They have urged anyone who can assist with the case to contact 08600 10111.
Details of his memorial service are yet to be announced.
