Cape Town – The UCT shutdown that was set to start on Wednesday has been postponed to Thursday by the labour union pending the 48 hour strike notice.

Workers represented by labour union, South African Liberated Public Sector Workers Union (Salipswu), and students held a meeting today and decided to defer the shutdown to Thursday so that the 48 hour notice period can lapse for the strike to be legal.

Meanwhile a mass meeting is set to be held on Wednesday, 13h00 at the Marikana Plaza, protest name for Jammie Plaza.

Context of the strike:

UCT workers feel aggrieved by the current shift system. They say that it has a devastating impact on their social life. They believe that there has been no change in leadership style since they were insourced by the university.

Summary of their demands:

  • Workers want a five day working week from Monday to Friday totalling 37.5 hours.
  • They want to be paid for overtime and double time on weekends.
  • All workers must be off on public holidays unless otherwise agreed with the worker.
  • Workers demand a shift allowance of 25% to all shift workers.
  • Pregnant womxn shall not work shifts.
