Cape Town – Four University of Cape Town (UCT) students were on Friday arrested in connection with the recent protests at the University.
Student leaders say the students are being held at the Claremont Police Station. Western Cape Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said that four people have been arrested for allegedly violating a court order.
UCT obtained a high court interdict against unlawful protest after the #UCTShutDown disrupted the provision of classes and other university operations. 7 students are currently out on bail for allegedly violating the same court court.
The latest crackdown comes after the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education visited parliament on Thursday urging student leaders to allow the university to finish the academic term.
A few hours after that the Univeristy put out a reward for people to come forward with any information relating to unlawful action at the univeristy.
The latest round of student protests has been organized under banner of UCT Fees Must Fall. Students demand, among other things, that the univeristy declares a 0% increase in fees and a commission of inquiry into suicide related deaths at the university. This is after more than 6 students died within 6 months in suspected suicide cases.
The four students will appear at the Wynberg Margistrate’s Court on Monday.
