UCT students staying in Leo Marquard and Graca Machel Halls woke up to a heavy stench of human faeces on Thursday morning.
It is believed that the faeces was thrown in the early hours of the morning. It is not clear at this stage who the culprits are nor whether anyone has been caught for this.
As a result of this, workers did not enter the kitchen citing the foul-smelling poo.
The poo-throwing coincides with feelings of discontent as Graca Machel workers allege that they are understaffed, underesourced, victimized and in some instances certain job descriptions have been changed without the prior knowledge of the affected workers.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola denied the existence of a strike by workers and without delving deep into the issues at hand indicated that there are ongoing talks between management and the worker’s representatives to address this. Moholola cited the increase in the worker’s salaries from 16%-96%, after they were insourced, as evidenced of the university’s commitment to social justice and transformation.
Moholola also denied that Graca Machel was understaffed saying that the residence has 24 catering staff who serve 381 students, meaning that the residence’s staffing ratio is 1 staff member to 16 students as compared to other residences with a ration of 1 is to 20.
